INTENSIVE TRAINING
á la CATT February 2 -4, 2024
Times change and many dancers find it difficult to commit to 2 years of CATT. Since there is still a great thirst for thorough knowledge we have changed the CATT format. From 10 days per semester we now offer 3 days of intensive training with the topics and guest teachers of each semester – for only ONE MORE TIME.
Easter 2023 our guests for the topics of the second semester were Yasmina of Cairo, Laura Huovinen and Laure Anne Poutot. In September 2023 Maizena and Olena – CATT Company Members and esteemed Graduates of CATT – as well as SBK Bollywood dancer taught the topics of the 3rd semester. Beata & Horacio were accompanied for the rhythm classes by Master Percussionist Khader Ahmad!
Please note: CATT 4th Semester topics will be offered FOR THE VERY LAST TIME.
This page and the page about the show and the performers will be updated accordingly, so check again or sign up for the newsletter!
Instructors
Beata & Horacio Cifuentes
both teach at their own Dance Academy and have been traveling all continents to teach and perform. They were among the first to tour with a full evening programm, shlepping about with 10 suitcases containing up to 28 costumes, backdrops and props accompanied by light designer Katri Kuusimäki and a wardrobe lady.
Since 2008 they taught the teacher / dancer program CATT (Certified Academic Teacher Training) which is now available to everybody in a slimmed down version. The program contains a lot of background knowledge, created lots of revelations through personal coaching and explicit technique explanations. We want you to understand each movement exactly and not only learn one choreography after the other and often times not really knowing what you are dancing or being unable to remember steps well. Beata & Horacio teach so that you can create your own dances, express your individuality and finally get rid of old dance technique problems. Understanding structure means easier memory and in general a lot of light shed on things! Ask any CATT graduate, much more than you think is possible!
The topics of the 4th semester will be taught for the last time February 2 -4, 2024.
Workshops with Beata
Friday February 2 14.30 – 15.45 pm: Creating a Choreography Part 1
Saturday February 3 1.45 – 2.45 pm: Advanced Technique
Sunday February 4 11 – 12 noon: Floor Barre + Stretching
Sunday February 4 12.15 – 1.45 pm: Rhythm Samaii + matching movements
Sunday February 4 5.15 – 6.30 pm: Creating a Choreography Part 2
Floor Barre + Stretching
is a wonderful way to start the (dance) day. The floor exercises not only provide strength and get rid of back pains, they also give you a sense of correct posture. Throw in long lean muscles and deep relaxation and enjoy a MUST DO class for dancers.
Please bring your own mat or towel.
Advanced Technique
The 4th semester is all about refining your own technique. All over the world the same movements cause problems. We will address these moves and clear them up for good. Up until January 15 you can hand in requests for your personal piéce de resistance, Technik á la carte!
Samaii
is an important rhythm especially used in Grand Soli. Learn to recognise rhythms and know their typical movements. Knowledge about rhythms and style will be very helpful to create and remember combinations and choreographies.
Choreography “made easy”, Part 1 and 2
By understanding the language of each single instrument and their use in a music piece you receive a manual to create your own dances. They will “tell” you how to use the space onstage, which movements of your repertoire fit in, determine energy level, focus, expression in Classical Raks Sharqi, Folklore, Songs or Um Kalthoum. By learning about music analysis you you will clearly see the geometrical patterns and system of the music. This makes it easy to remember and create anew.

Ballet
Many Oriental Dancers are a bit scared of ballet, thinking of acrobatic leg lifts etc. This ballet class is made for Oriental Dancers to enhance their understanding of structure, beautiful lines and are generally helpful for dance technique of any style. So use the opportunity to progress and have fun!
Shimmie Variations with and without Cymbals
Every dancer should be part musician, knowing the rhythms and playing cymbals! Any prop will make the audience more attentive and add to your performance. Playing finger cymbals cannot be learned in one class, like playing any instrument it takes time. But there are ways to learn and develop from cymbal frustration to cymbal heaven! Combined with Shimmie-Variations.
Andalusian, Muwashahat
is an Arabic Dance Style from the 10. century when Spain was occupied by the Maures. Mahmoud Reda rediscovered this dance for the stage when he founded the Reda Troupe in Cairo in 1959. Today his style is regarded as THE Andalusian Muwashahat, a dance full of romance and elegance.
Spanish Arabic
Oriental Dance with elements of Flamenco, music and dance fusion both styles into a sensual mix of fire, pride, strength and temperament. Discover your wild side!
